On March 11, 2012, Jazz Yukon recently had the very distinct pleasure of presenting jazz vocalist Diana Panton with the Canadian Jazz Masters. This show was the final offering in our Jazz On The Wing series for 2011-12. Joining Ms. Panton was Don Thompson on acoustic bass and piano, Guido Basso on trumpet, flugelhorn and chromatic harmonica with Reg Schwager on guitar; Canadian Jazz Masters all.

Our sold out venue was enchanted by a wonderful array of tunes from Diana Panton’s 4 independently produced CDs. The music was accessible, the tempos were easy going and our audience was completely spellbound. We were drawn into Panton’s aura as moths to a flame. Her love of the songs was reflected in the conviction with which she delivered the lyrics, sung in both French and English. Panton’s voice has a lovely clarity and her phrasing flows so naturally the audience is swept along with her. Regardless of the subject matter or vintage of the songs, each one ended with a collective sigh of enjoyment.

Ms. Panton took advantage of the extreme musicality of her band delivering songs in a variety of formats. We were treated to the full trio featuring solos by Thompson’s piano, Basso’s flugelhorn, muted trumpet and harmonica, as well as Schwager’s exceptionally tasteful guitar work. The vocal quality of Basso’s flugelhorn was the perfect compliment to Panton’s intimate singing style. It was if we were listening in on a very private conversation between close friends. We also heard Ms. Panton’s voice in several duets with Thompson’s piano or acoustic bass. This variety ensured that the listeners were fully engaged throughout the evening.

Jazz Yukon often solicits comments from our audience and we were delighted by this one: "This (show with Diana Panton) was my first experience at Jazz on the Wing and I must say my experience has been transcending. Thank you."

Another measure of the success for our shows are reflected in the sales of the performers CDs. Panton’s sales set a new and ‘best-ever’ record for our series. This coupled with our best ticket sales of the season capped our year on a very positive note. It would be our very great honour to bring Diana Panton with The Canadian Jazz Masters back to our stage.
